Each rung differs from the one above by exactly one letter. The highlighted tile is the letter that changes as you climb.

  1. BEND (top rung): Curve in the road
  2. BEAD: Little ball on a necklace
  3. BEAM: Ray of light, or a big grin
  4. BEAR: Honey-loving forest animal
  5. DEAR: Beloved, or pricey
  6. REAR: The back part
  7. REAL (bottom rung): Genuine, not fake

How to solve level 4, step by step

  1. Answer the five clued rungs first. On the level 4 ladder they solve to BEAD, BEAM, BEAR, DEAR and REAR.
  2. Now put those five in the one order where each word differs from its neighbour by a single letter. That forced order (the same puzzle read either way up) links them like this:
  3. BEAD becomes BEAM by changing the fourth letter from D to M.
  4. BEAM becomes BEAR by changing the fourth letter from M to R.
  5. BEAR becomes DEAR by changing the first letter from B to D.
  6. DEAR becomes REAR by changing the first letter from D to R.
  7. Line the five up that way and the ends unlock. The top answer BEND sits one letter from BEAD (the third letter, N to A), and the bottom answer REAL sits one letter from REAR (the fourth letter, R to L). Solve those two clues to finish the climb.
