How to solve level 39, step by step

  1. Answer the five clued rungs first. On the level 39 ladder they solve to SOCKET, LOCKET, LOCKER, ROCKER and ROCKET.
  2. Now put those five in the one order where each word differs from its neighbour by a single letter. That forced order (the same puzzle read either way up) links them like this:
  3. SOCKET becomes LOCKET by changing the first letter from S to L.
  4. LOCKET becomes LOCKER by changing the sixth letter from T to R.
  5. LOCKER becomes ROCKER by changing the first letter from L to R.
  6. ROCKER becomes ROCKET by changing the sixth letter from R to T.
