How to solve level 12, step by step

  1. Answer the five clued rungs first. On the level 12 ladder they solve to CLAY, CLAN, CLAM, SLAM and SLIM.
  2. Now put those five in the one order where each word differs from its neighbour by a single letter. That forced order (the same puzzle read either way up) links them like this:
  3. CLAY becomes CLAN by changing the fourth letter from Y to N.
  4. CLAN becomes CLAM by changing the fourth letter from N to M.
  5. CLAM becomes SLAM by changing the first letter from C to S.
  6. SLAM becomes SLIM by changing the third letter from A to I.
  7. Line the five up that way and the ends unlock. The top answer SLAY sits one letter from CLAY (the first letter, S to C), and the bottom answer SLIP sits one letter from SLIM (the fourth letter, M to P). Solve those two clues to finish the climb.
