Is NYT Tiles free, and can you play it unlimited?

For six years NYT Tiles was one of the nicest free things on the internet: a quiet board of patterned tiles you matched two at a time. In August 2025 it moved behind a paywall. Here is what changed, how its unlimited Zen mode works, and where you can play a tile matching game free, as much as you like.

The short answer

NYT Tiles is no longer free. Since late August 2025 it needs a New York Times Games subscription, and so does Zen mode, its endless way to play. If you want a tile matching game you can play free and unlimited, Tile Peel runs in your browser with 500 levels, a new daily sheet and Tiles Unlimited, with no download and no signup.

Is NYT Tiles free?

It used to be, with a daily limit. Today it is for subscribers only. The timeline:

WhenWhat happened
June 2019The New York Times launches Tiles, a matching game on its puzzles site.
March 2020NYT Games says Tiles is free for up to eight games a day.
Late August 2025The Mini Crossword stops being free on August 27, and Tiles and Letter Boxed move behind the Games subscription with it.

As of October 2026, Tiles is still listed as subscription only, and the Times has not said it will bring the free boards back.

NYT Tiles unlimited: Zen mode

Zen mode is the unlimited way to play NYT Tiles. As you clear tiles, new ones drop in, so the board never runs out and you can keep matching for as long as you want. Your combo can still break when nothing on the board matches the tile you picked. Screen Rant points out that Zen mode is the only place to reach the very longest combos, because the board keeps going.

Zen mode is a subscriber feature, so it went behind the same paywall as the game.

A free tile matching game: Tile Peel

We made Tile Peel after players asked for it on our game requests board. It keeps what makes this kind of game good, a calm board, pretty patterns and the pull of a long chain, but it has its own rule: you peel each tile from the center out.

Every tile is a stack of up to three patterned layers. Tap a tile, then another tile with the same center shape in the same color, and both centers peel off.

Same center
Peeled
The first two tiles share a center shape, so both centers peel off and the layers underneath move up.

Only the top layer counts. Two tiles can share the shape underneath and still not match, because you can't see it yet. Peel the centers first.

Not a match yet
These two share the shape underneath, but their centers differ, so they do not match.

Your second tile stays picked, so you carry on from it. Match its new top layer and your chain grows. If the layers under a matching pair match too, they come off in the same move. That is a double peel, and it counts twice.

Same center, same middle
Double peel
Both the centers and the middles match, so two layers peel off at once.

Every board can be cleared in one unbroken chain, so there is always a perfect run to look for. You just have to find it.

Levels, a daily sheet and Tiles Unlimited

ModeHow it plays
Levels500 levels in 10 chapters, from a gentle 4x4 board to a 5x6 wall with stacks three layers deep. Each level gives you a few spare breaks, and a clear with no breaks earns three stars.
Daily sheetOne sheet a day, the same for everyone, in a new look each day. No limit on breaks. Clear it in one unbroken chain for a Perfect peel, then share your result.
Tiles UnlimitedEndless play. Clear a sheet and a new one arrives in a new look, and your chain carries over from sheet to sheet.

All three are free and run in any browser, on a phone, a laptop or a school Chromebook. You only sign in if you want your progress saved or a spot on the leaderboard.

Tiles questions

Is NYT Tiles free?

Not any more. Since late August 2025 Tiles needs a New York Times Games subscription, along with the Mini Crossword and Letter Boxed. Before that you could play a few boards a day free.

Is there an NYT Tiles unlimited mode?

Yes, Zen mode. It refills the board as you clear tiles, so you can keep matching for as long as you like. It is a subscriber feature.

Can I play a game like Tiles free and unlimited?

Yes. Tile Peel is a free tile matching game in your browser, with 500 levels, a new daily sheet and Tiles Unlimited, which deals a fresh sheet every time you clear one. There is nothing to download and no signup.

Is Tile Peel the same game as NYT Tiles?

No. Both are calm tile matching games built on chains, but the rules differ.
